3 Things to Consider when Comparing a Gas and Diesel Truck for Sale

When it comes to buying a new or used vehicle, you’ve got options.
Car, truck or SUV? All-wheel drive or front-wheel drive? Sedan or coup? Black, blue, silver or some other wonderful color?

And that’s before you even take a look under the hood.

If you’re in the market for a truck, you might be wondering about the differences between diesel and gas engines. While both types of engines will get you from Point A to Point B, there are some differences you should be aware of before you buy:

Fuel efficiency

Most people who search for a diesel truck for sale do so at least in part because of the improved fuel efficiency delivered by the diesel engine.
In general, a diesel engine will get you about 30 percent more from a tank of gas than its gasoline-powered counterpart.
It is worth noting, however, that diesel fuel does tend to be a bit more expensive than gasoline.

Vehicle maintenance

In addition to the type of fuel used to power the engine, engine components are probably the biggest difference between diesel-fueled engines and gasoline-fueled engines.
Diesel engines do not use spark plugs or distributors. Obviously, this eliminates the chance of them going out (as well as the need for ignition tuneups). And fewer parts is generally a good thing in any engine. But both types of engines require you to keep up with oil changes and air, oil and fuel filter maintenance.

One component diesel engines have that gasoline engines don’t is a water-separator collection bin, which must be manually emptied from time to time.
In general, a diesel truck for sale will require about the same level of maintenance as its gasoline counterpart.

Towing and payload capacity

When it comes to towing large loads long distances, you simply can’t beat a diesel engine.
There’s a reason most of the tractor-trailers you see making their way across the country’s freeways are diesels. Trucks equipped with diesel engines have more torque. They also have exhaust brakes. They can carry more, longer and with less fuel.

All of this adds up to an advantage if you are planning to take a trip while hauling a camper, boat or a bunch of cargo–especially if you’re making your way up and down steep slopes and huge hills.
