Parts & Systems to Inspect Before Buying a Car

Checking just a few aspects of the vehicle before committing to anything can potentially save you a great deal of time, frustration, and money. Here are five key parts and systems to inspect in a car so you don’t end up with a lemon that needs a ton of work.

The Exterior Body

First, thoroughly check the vehicle’s exterior for any signs of damage. Even the slightest abrasion could indicate that the vehicle was involved in a wreck at some point. Even if much of the visible damage may have been repaired, there could be any number of unaddressed issues under the hood from the collision.

Engine and Transmission

Under the hood, look for any indications of fluid leaks or signs of oil buildup on the engine block. When taking the car for a test drive, listen for any unusual sounds that could point to a problem with the transmission or other vital components. Always request to review any paperwork or receipts related to previous repairs as well. If the vehicle has a history of breaking down, it may be better to look for another option.

Tires and Suspension

Using a penny, check the depth of the tread on the tires. If the tires are in good condition, the tread should reach at least the top of Abraham Lincoln’s head. Be aware that if the car has old tires, you’ll likely need to invest in new tires sooner than later, so be sure to consider this added cost on top of the vehicle’s price tag. For the suspension, listen for any clicking or clanking while driving.

Interior Electronics

Check the functionality of electronics, lights, and automatic door locks when inside the car. You’ll also want to test out the vehicle’s sound system to ensure the speakers on both the driver and passenger sides are working properly. Other interior electronics to inspect include power seats, air conditioning, and heating.

The Dashboard

Pay special attention to any warnings on the dashboard. If you notice a “service engine soon” light or another problem, it’s a good idea to consider using an OSB scanner to check the condition of the vehicle. In some cases, warning lights on the dashboard could be old information, and the car’s computer simply needs a reset to clear the codes that are showing up.
