What Is an Air Re-circulator and How Does It Work in Your Vehicle?

Vehicles usually come with two air circulation buttons, the fresh air and the air re-circulation button. The former is used to blow air from outside into the car, while the latter is used to circulate the air inside the car. Once you press this button, it closes the air duct, preventing outside air from entering into the car. This button is found on the A/C control panel of your car, and you can easily recognize it since it is almost similar to a recycling sign.

When to Use Air Re-circulators

This button is most effective during the hot days, as it helps cool down the air inside the car. This increases the performance of the car’s blower and air compressor on hot days. Using the button on a cold day will cause the windscreen and the windows to fog up. Also, if it is hot and rain starts suddenly, fogging can happen. In either of these cases, you should turn on the defrost button.

Benefits of Using Air Re-circulator

Using the air re-circulator in your car has several benefits:

  • Prolongs the life of the A/C compressor and blower – generally, these two are expensive in terms of replacing the parts and labor. By using an air re-circulator, you save the A/C compressor from cooling the hot air from outside and the blower from moving air from outside.
  • Helps keep the air filter clean – by circulating the air inside the car, you minimize the chances of blowing in dirty air from outside. This way, the air filter takes time to get dirty. Note that when the filter is dirty, it means that the blower motor has to work twice as hard to pull in the air. This means you have to change the filter in order to maintain the right volume of air intake. Or, you can simply use the re-circulation button.

In case you have fears that you might exhaust the air inside the car if you switch off the blower and turn on the re-circulator, you shouldn’t. The car is not a vacuum and a good amount of air will leak in through the air conditioning system and the windows. This happens even when the windows are shut, and A/C closed.
