Road Trip Tips for Driving Through the Desert

Follow These Road Trip Tips to Ensure Your Drive Is a Pleasant One

To ensure your trip through the desert is as safe and comfortable as possible, check out these road trip tips:

Pack the Water!
However, much water you think you’ll need, double it. Staying hydrated is the best way to beat the heat outside of your car’s A/C. And if, for some reason, you end up in a traffic jam or stalled in the middle of nowhere, you’ll be prepared.

External Phone Charger
Your car may already have a USB charging port, but if you run out of fuel or your battery dies, you may soon find your device dying too. Inexpensive backup batteries can be found everywhere. Charge a few and take them with you. Speaking of batteries, you might want to consider investing in a jump starter, so a dead car battery doesn’t derail your day’s plans.

Guard Against Sun & Heat Exposure
Sunburn, heatstroke and dehydration can be extremely serious conditions. Be sure to wear your sunscreen, hat and dark sunglasses. Lightweight, long pants and a loose, long-sleeved shirt can actually keep you cooler than shorts and a t-shirt. Reapply sunscreen as recommended and restrict activity in the sun to early morning or evening, when the sun is less intense.

Check the Weather Report
Mid-June through September is monsoon season in Nevada and quick, violent storms are not uncommon. Listen to weather reports and be prepared for flash flooding in washes, canyons and roadways.

Get Your Car Serviced Beforehand
Breaking down in the desert is the last thing you want to have happen. A car you can count on can turn a good road trip into a great once. Even if your car is in top shape, try to limit your driving to around 250 miles per day, or about three to four hours. Your car will be happier and so will you!

Bonus Tip: Toss a multi-purpose reflective blanket in the glove compartment, pack a few extra energy bars and make sure you have a physical map for those times your devices aren’t receiving a signal.
